In the third century BC, Sri Lanka adopted Buddhism as its principal religion. Sri Lankans were skilled builders and erected numerous great stupas - shrines of the Buddhist religion. They also constructed complex systems of irrigation which brought prosperity to the land, while increasing their wealth and power through trade links across the Indian Ocean and with South East Asia.
